a few Juney things



We've been inside a lot this month, taking refuge from the 100+ degree heat. It seems so hot for June, even for where we live.



Penny is really starting to be a good dog. She knows doggie right from wrong now. Not that she always chooses doggie right. She watches over Silas, which I love, except when she licks the crap out of his face. Then I have to yell a little bit.



Nicky started ninja school, aka Taekwondo. He mainly wanted to show them that he knows a kick or two and spent a good chunk of the class checking himself out in the mirror. He also learned high, middle and low blocks. This is going to be fun.



I love that they sort of play together.



I started making baby food. It's so easy and makes me feel super-accomplished (that's the important part). The last batch lasted about two weeks so I'm going to make more this time. I would love to just make a day of it once a month. My little steamer/rice cooker is really coming in handy.



This guy is sleeping through the night for the most part. It is so bizarre and confusing to wake up with the sun. I finally felt okay with putting him in his crib at night, and with the help of a baby monitor it's gone beautifully. I love sleep.



We're still waiting to hear back from the school about whether or not Nicky's been accepted for kindergarten. Hopefully we'll know soon so we can make some plans.



Last night I made the first caprese salad of the summer. Our tomatoes are still ripening, but the basil plant is huge. This to me is just summer on a plate. We also discovered skirt steak. It is less expensive than chicken or ground turkey, but so, so good if prepared correctly. I marinated it in some balsamic vinegar, worchestershire sauce, garlic, salt and pepper for only about 30 minutes, and it picked up the flavor really well. After grilling it, we sliced it against the grain in small strips. That is essential with skirt steak apparently, otherwise it can be tough and chewy. Ricky made a concoction of melted feta, sour cream, milk and thyme to go with it, and we had some whole green beans on the side. We don't eat a lot of red meat, but this was such an enjoyable dinner.

I am getting ready to cross-train on the Pediatric floor, starting next week. I'm so excited, and it's been awhile since I was excited about work. I worked there once a few weeks ago, and it was such an interesting (and challenging day). I learned a LOT. My patients ranged in age from 18 days to 67 years. Anyway, I'm glad to be adding another type of nursing to my skill set and also take a step in the direction of working with mothers and children.

I'm a proud big sister


This is my baby brother, Steven. He just finished high school. Yay Steve! 

A few words about Steven:
  • He was the fattest baby of us four kids. I think it's pretty obvious why.
  • We're nearly ten years apart. I was in fourth grade when he was born, and I wanted to carry him everywhere. 
  • Nicky reminds me a lot of Steven as a little kid. They're goofy in the same way.
  • He has a big heart.
  • He fixes computers.
  • If he ever wants to quit his day job, he could totally have a career as a long jumper.
  • He does a great impersonation of Louis Armstrong.
  • He plays the trombone.
  • He used to hide in my closet and chew up entire packs of gum. He would also hide in my closet so he could jump out and scare me when I came home from my job at Burger King. 
  • Brothers are pesky and wonderful.

On a whim,


we spruced up the old canoe my grandpa built,


and took it out on the river.



It was a little scary with four of us in the canoe, so I took Nicky for a swim while the big boys went out on the water.


This really has nothing to do with the visit, but it makes me smile. Little brothers, on their way to visit grandparents, around 1994. Love my Dad's smile in the background.

The hill country of central Texas is one of my favorite places. We went there a lot when I was growing up, so the sights and smells, the humidity, the barbeque....it all makes me nostalgic. I love that we have family there, and therefore a reason to visit once or twice a year.

This time, it was to celebrate Ricky's sister's graduation from physical therapy school.


She's worked so hard, and we're so proud of her! First in the family to get her doctorate. She's going to be a great PT.


Other highlights from the weekend included:

  • a visit to Zilker Park to ride the train, and the Austin Children's Museum, where Nicky played with lots of fun gadgets and exhibits.



  • lunch at Whole Foods. We were seriously overwhelmed by the choices! I think if we had a Whole Foods here I would spend way too much money there.
  • dinner at the Salt Lick-really, really good barbeque!
  • a quick visit with some old friends who moved away a few years ago

Green all around, good food, humidity, family, friends.....great trip.

right now Silas is...

  • 6 1/2 months old
  • the proud owner of two bottom teeth, and cutting a top tooth (too fast!)


  • eating bananas, sweet potato, applesauce, squash and rice crackers
  • really getting the hang of eating from a spoon
  • holding his own bottle
  • air jumping-he waves his arms and legs frantically and screeches in excitement
  • sitting supported, but still topples over pretty easily


  • settling into naps pretty easily, smiling when I put him in his crib (yeah, now that I said that, I know what to expect tomorrow....)
  • still waking up to nurse several times a night (I'm ready for some sleep!)
  • still thinking his big brother is the coolest person ever (seriously, he's infatuated with him, it's so cute)


  • getting big! His 6 month check-up has been cancelled twice, so I'm not sure how much he weighs, but he's outgrowing everything again. He's wearing 6-9 month clothes.
  • rolling from back to belly and vice versa. I love putting him down on a big blanket and just letting him go to town. The bed is no longer safe, unless he's barricaded with pillows.
  • starting to incorporate ba-ba and ma-ma sounds into his cries


5 Things

  • coffee outside in the morning is my new favorite thing
  • this poor blog's been pretty neglected lately. I actually have several unfinished posts that just need to be finished, once I find the motivation. I'm trying to not just throw things together, and that takes time, I'm finding. May was a very busy month, with graduations, family visits, and a high school reunion. It is nice, and needed, to be home, and have some space in my days for catching up.


  • Speaking of space, I'm feeling the need to create more of it, in many ways. There's a rummage sale at my church coming up, and I want to do some major purging for that (all those things I've been holding onto just in case). I need to do a media fast of some sort. Less multitasking. Practicing the daily office-getting better at that. Yesterday morning at church our pastor led us through a time of silence, stillness and meditation that ended with a focus on the attributes of God we love, and the things we may need to let go of to create more space for Him. I loved it. It seems to be the theme of my life lately. Just the other night, having dinner with friends, one was talking about clearing out clutter, literally and figuratively, as a way to make room for God to bring new things into our lives-like relationships, opportunities, more quality time. I have to laugh- sometimes these messages are so clear, and it seems like everywhere I go the same words are being spoken. It's even in Nicky's complete enjoyment of a pile of dirt as I type this. Okay, I'm listening. 


  • Our backyard landscaping project is so close to being done. The garden is flourishing, the patio is done, the grass is growing (still needs to fill in, but it looks better each week), and the dog run is in place. This week we need to fill the french drain with small rocks, then take a load of excess dirt to the green landfill, and pick up a load of free mulch from there, to cover the remaining dirt. We've also been thinking of making a raised melon patch but that may turn into a project for next year, since it's gettting late in the season. We'll see. Even though it's taken months, I'm glad we're doing it this way. I'm going to be so proud of this thing once it's done. I never realized how much work it was to make a patch of raw dirt look pretty!


  • This year we're growing three kinds of tomatoes (cherry, beefsteak and yellow pear), basil, cilantro, red bell pepper, poblano pepper, jalapeno, butternut squash, and yellow squash in the garden, and rosemary, mint, and thai basil in pots. Lots of caprese salad, salsa, calabacitas, fresh marinara sauce, and maple roasted butternut squash in the near future....I love summer.
